School Events

Schools are a key segment focus for participation in any sport. BMXNZ recognise that BMX Clubs must work with schools to build participation and increase awareness of BMX as a valid school sport.

School challenge events will enable Clubs to replicate the basics of BMX racing for schools to showcase the sport and allow kids to taste BMX without inital membership commitment.

BMXNZ and the Clubs can then work with schools to build BMX into the school sporting team structure.

BMXNZ will deliver events into this segment, by replicating our Major Event formula but scaling them into a smaller event series, which also replicates the other cycling codes school programs. Leading with North & South events early in the calendar year, then a Schools Nationals later in the calendar year. These events would work alongside the AIMS Games event at Intermediate Level.

The events are aimed initially at Primary and Intermediate Schools, so Years 5 and 6 from Primary, years 7 and 8 from Intermediate. These are the KEY age groups of our sport, who are young enough to start building general bike skills, who then stay on longer to build race and sport skills.

Our sport working with schools will increase awareness of our sport, with the goal of expanding participation and establishing BMX as a normal school sporting code.
